The Climate Change Authority is examining how Australia can accelerate reductions in fossil methane emissions.
Methane is a highly potent greenhouse gas that drives significant warming in the near term. Because it has a short atmospheric lifetime, reducing methane emissions now can deliver rapid climate benefits.
Fossil methane—emissions from coal mining and gas production—accounts for around 24% of Australia’s methane emissions and is one of the most practical opportunities for near-term methane abatement.
This project focuses on identifying practical actions to increase methane reductions across these sectors.
What we are looking at
The Authority is seeking evidence and views on:
Abatement opportunities: technologies and practices that can reduce fossil methane emissions in the near term.
Barriers to action: commercial, regulatory, technical and operational constraints.
Current policies: how existing measures, including the Safeguard Mechanism, are working in practice.
Future options: additional policies, incentives or targets that could accelerate abatement.
We want to hear from you
The Authority is making 2 options available for you to provide your responses.
Option 1: Submit your response through our online portal.
Option 2: Upload a file with your completed response to the consultation paper after completing the demographic questions in our online portal.
